The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh has warned that the state task force could be disbanded if any of its officers are found guilty of human rights violations.

Jimoh issued the warning during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, while addressing concerns raised by a viral video involving the arrest of a traffic offender.

Defending the conduct of officers in the incident, the police chief stated that there was no evidence of abuse or inhumane treatment.

He explained that the suspect, who was arrested for driving against traffic, was processed in line with legal procedures and taken before a mobile court.

According to him, the court granted bail, but the individual was later remanded after failing to meet the bail conditions.

The commissioner emphasised that the task force operates within the law and plays a vital role in enforcing environmental and traffic regulations in Lagos.

He disclosed that personnel have undergone retraining programmes aimed at promoting professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.

Jimoh, however, stressed that misconduct would not be tolerated, warning that any confirmed case of rights abuse could lead to the dissolution of the task force.

He also acknowledged the role of social media and the press in highlighting public concerns but cautioned against the spread of unverified information that could erode trust in law enforcement.

The police chief urged residents to comply with traffic and environmental laws and to report any cases of misconduct by officers.

He assured that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated, reiterating the command’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

Jimoh noted that maintaining order in a city as large as Lagos, with an estimated population of over 20 million people, requires strict law enforcement balanced with respect for human dignity.
