One of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has landed in Germany.
Kalu, a prominent campaigner for the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, landed at the German Airport from Abuja at 5am on Saturday.
He is in the European country to keep an appointment with his doctor.
A source at the Helios Klinik Wiesbaden Hospital in Germany said Kalu’s appointment was initially slated for December 10, 11 and 12 “but the doctor attending to him travelled to Saudi Arabia on December 10 to attend to an emergency. The appointment was rescheduled again and Dr. Kalu will see his doctor on December 15, 16, 17 and 18.
“You know he remains an outpatient till his doctor certifies him okay. In fact, he will see the doctor again on January 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. The doctor will take a final look on his wounds on January 25 and that is when we will know if he will be discharged finally”.

Kalu, who came back to Nigeria after the surgery, had to return to Germany due to doctor’s advice.
Because of his case in court, it will be recalled that Kalu, a two-term governor and former presidential candidate, on October 30, 2018, wrote a letter to the President of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking permission to travel for medical surgery in Germany.
A copy was sent to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

Kalu said, inter alia: “My Lord, I wish to travel to Germany for an urgent medical surgery operations which has been postponed many times because of this trial and which the trial court is aware of.
“This application is directed to you specifically because I was given the date for this medical surgery after the criminal matter against me was adjourned sine die on September 27, 2018.
“I wish to travel to meet doctors’ appointment fixed for October 31, 2018. Attached are copies of Treatment Confirmation by the hospital and payment deposit receipt. The post-operative recovery period is between 8 – 10 weeks as stated by the doctor”
Kalu, APC senatorial candidate in Abia North, is also a leading light of the party and a close confidant of Buhari.
In fact, he is leading the campaign for Buhari’s re-election in the South-East in particular and Nigeria in general.
Our correspondent learned in Abia North that residents have resolved to vote for him during the February 16 National Assembly election.
One of them, Patrick Ozumba, described the former governor as a ‘Man of the People’.
“If you remember, former Governor Theodore Orji (Kalu’s Chief of Staff) was in prison when Dr. Kalu mobilised for him and he was elected as governor in 2007. Dr. Kalu’s charisma as a man of the people is still there. We love him and will support him. He is our next senator. Anywhere he is, even if he is still in that German hospital, we will vote for him as our senator”.
Another resident, Paul Enyinnaya, said Kalu’s accomplishments as governor in education, health, agriculture and infrastructure cannot be forgotten.
“He really tried for us in education, health, agriculture and infrastructure. He is loved by our people. Not only him but anybody Dr. Kalu supports will be voted for”.
But, Chike Onu, a member of APC, is not happy with the way the national leadership of the party is treating Kalu.
“If you recall, Dr. Kalu joined the APC on November 16, 2016. Despite the fact that before then, his mother and brother were already in APC, nobody loved the party in this part of the country. His membership of APC has brought light into the party. He went to all Anglican, Catholic, Methodist Bishops and other clerics to talk to them about President Muhammadu Buhari’s good intention for the country, particularly the South-East. He also had series of meetings with Islamic clerics.
“Since then, he has built formidable structure for APC in South-East. He also led prominent South-Easterners to the party. But, look at the way he is being treated by the EFCC. We are really angry over these trumped-up charges. APC leadership must do something about this matter because anywhere Dr. Kalu goes, we go. Anything he tells us to do, we will do”.
