Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has dispelled confusion surrounding the proposed ₦25 billion allocation for the South-East Development Commission (SEDC).
The senator clarified that the funding is not a contribution from South-East governors but rather a Federal Government appropriation recommended by the Senate Committee for National Assembly appropriation. This clarification comes in the wake of mounting concerns and criticisms from various stakeholders in the region regarding the budgetary process.
Senator Kalu, who has been an influential figure in the Nigerian political landscape, highlighted that the proposed allocation is a positive step towards addressing developmental challenges faced by the South East.
He emphasized that the funds, which are earmarked for infrastructure development and social welfare programs, aim to uplift the region and foster economic growth.
“Let me be clear, this allocation is not a gift from the governors of the South East; it is a Federal Government initiative,” Kalu stated. “The Senate Committee for National Assembly appropriation has deemed it necessary to allocate these funds to the SEDC to ensure that the South-East is not left behind in the national development agenda.”
The senator also addressed concerns regarding the lack of consultation prior to the budget submission by the management of the SEDC. Many South East senators and constituents have expressed their frustration over what they perceive as a top-down approach to budgetary decisions that directly impact their region.
Kalu acknowledged these concerns, stating that while the Senate Committee was not consulted before the budget was submitted, it retains the constitutional authority to scrutinize and review the budget during the defense process.
“The Senate is committed to its oversight responsibilities, and we will ensure that the budget reflects the needs of our people,” Kalu asserted. “During the defence process, we will seek to engage with various stakeholders, including community leaders and local governments, to ensure that the allocation serves its intended purpose.”
The senator’s remarks come at a time when the South East region is grappling with numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, high unemployment rates, and a pressing need for social services. Many residents have voiced skepticism about the efficacy of the proposed funding, questioning whether it will translate into tangible benefits for the community.
In response to these concerns, Kalu assured constituents that the allocation would be closely monitored and assessed to ensure accountability. “We will not allow these funds to be mismanaged or diverted. The people of the South East deserve to see real change, and we will hold the SEDC accountable for delivering results,” he stated.
The senator’s proactive approach has been met with cautious optimism from some quarters. While many are eager to see the funds put to good use, there are lingering doubts about the effectiveness of the SEDC in executing development projects. Local advocacy groups have called for greater transparency and community involvement in the planning and implementation of initiatives funded by the proposed allocation.
