Dr Toyin Taiwo, Chief of Staff to Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described journalism as the bedrock of accountability and transparency in governance across all sectors of society.

Taiwo made the assertion in Abeokuta on Thursday after receiving the “Pillar of Good Governance” award from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council.

Represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Mr Wasiu Isiaka, Taiwo emphasised the media’s crucial role in informing the public, scrutinising leadership, and shaping national discourse.

“Through the courage and dedication of journalists to truth, public trust is cultivated and sustained,” he said.

He described journalism as the watchdog of democracy, holding power to account and uncovering hidden truths without fear or favour.

He urged media practitioners to continue to uphold the highest standards of objectivity, impartiality, and investigative integrity.

“Here in Ogun State, we take pride in our rich heritage of journalistic excellence. We are the birthplace of media legends like Chief Olusegun Osoba and the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande.”

Taiwo urged journalists never to compromise the truth, reaffirming that their loyalty must always lie with the people.

“In an age of misinformation and political polarisation, the profession must divest itself of partisanship and recommit to the core values of ethical reporting.”

He assured that the state government remained committed to making Ogun a beacon of excellence in governance, development, and democratic leadership.

In his goodwill message, Mr Kehinde Onasanya, the State Head of Service, reiterated the media’s critical role in governance.

“The media holds the essential responsibility of informing, educating, and shaping public discourse,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Wale Olanrewaju, NUJ Chairman, emphasised the importance of celebrating Dr Taiwo’s achievements and recognising the efforts of those working tirelessly for the progress of Ogun State.
