Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan reaffirmed on Tuesday confidence that the negotiations in Jeddah under the Saudi-U.S. patronage will achieve sustainable peace.
Al-Burhan made the remarks when he received a phone call from Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council chaired by Al-Burhan said in a statement.
“In order for the Jeddah talks to succeed, the “rebels” need to be committed to leaving hospitals, service centers and citizens’ homes.
“They should evacuate the wounded and open passages for delivery of humanitarian aid,” he noted.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have been leading talks between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Saudi port city of Jeddah.
The talks resulted in the signing of the Agreement on a Short-Term Cease-fire and Humanitarian Arrangements which expired on June 3.
Sudan has been witnessing deadly armed clashes between the army and the RSF in the capital Khartoum and other areas since April 15.
The conflict has left 863 people dead and 3,531 others injured, according to the Sudanese Doctors Union’s update.
At least 1.6 million people have been displaced, fleeing to safer locations inside and outside Sudan, according to the UN figures.
