IPAC Warns Rising Nomination Fees Threaten Nigeria’s Democracy

The Inter-Party Advisory Council has raised alarm over the rising cost of nomination forms by major political parties, warning that the trend could weaken democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The body described the development as a growing threat to inclusivity and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Speaking in Lagos, James Adeshina said the increasing fees were making it difficult for capable but less financially privileged individuals to contest for public office.

He noted that the high cost of nomination forms was gradually limiting opportunities to wealthy candidates with strong financial backing

Adeshina warned that the trend could transform Nigeria’s democratic process into what he described as an “elite contest,” rather than a competition based on ideas, competence, and service.

He stressed that political participation should not be determined by financial capacity.

The IPAC spokesman urged political parties to reconsider their pricing structures to ensure broader participation.

He said reducing nomination fees would help restore confidence in the electoral process and strengthen internal party democracy.

Adeshina acknowledged efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure credible elections.

However, he emphasized that transparency must begin with fair candidate selection processes within political parties.

He encouraged aspirants discouraged by high fees to explore other political parties with more affordable entry requirements.

According to him, several IPAC-member parties offer accessible pathways for credible candidates to participate in elections.

The council identified key dangers associated with expensive nomination forms, including:

* Exclusion of qualified candidates

* Weakening of internal party democracy

* Decline in public trust

* Emergence of profit-driven governance

IPAC urged stakeholders, including political parties and regulatory bodies, to work together to protect the integrity and inclusiveness of Nigeria’s democracy.

It emphasized that electoral credibility goes beyond voting processes to include equal access to candidacy.
