Fubara and Wike

Five months after his inauguration as Governor of Rivers State, the crisis between
Siminalayi Fubara and the immediate past governor, Nyesom Wike, has deepened.
Fubara, on Monday, with his supporters, stormed the House of Assembly Complex, Port Harcourt, shortly after the lawmakers, led by their Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, convened to begin impeachment proceedings against him.
It is generally believed that Wike, who is the FCT Minister, is behind the move to sack Fubara due to irreconcilable partisan differences.
Fubara declared that he did nothing to warrant impeachment by the lawmakers and challenged the lawmakers to let the people know his sins.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.
He added, “Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press.”

He vowed to resist any unjustified impeachment attempt against him and dared his detractors to tell the world his offence.
There was a face-off with security operatives on his way to the House of Assembly.

The lawmakers had earlier impeached the Majority Leader, Hon Edison Ehie, an ally of the governor, ahead of the plot to impeach Fubar
Addressing his supporters, Fubara said: “I know how you people are feeling. Just take it easy. When we have the youth, we have power.

“But the difference with our own power is we will not misuse it. We woke up this morning to a very troubling news. We have gone to the Assembly to see for ourselves what has happened.

“On my way there, tear gas was fired at me. But it doesn’t matter, somebody will die one day. Whether you die inside your house or on the road. So, my journey today, whatever it is that wants to happen, let it happen.

“What I’m saying is that any attempt that is not justified will be resisted. That offence that I have committed, come out and tell the people of Rivers State. That’s what I want. That offence Fubara committed warrants impeaching me.

“At the appropriate time, I will address the press. Thank you. God bless you.”
