A few days after becoming the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has sent an urgent request to President Muhammadu Buhari: sack all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs).
The reason: they are his senior in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and it will be difficult for them to succumb to his (Idris) authority and follow instructions.
If the request is granted, more than 30 officers will be retired.
Idris was promoted from the post of commissioner to AIG last year.
Although Freedom Online learned that some of them have agreed to work under Idris, the acting IGP, a source said, told a few officers in the Force that it would be difficult for them to give him 100 per cent loyalty.
Said the source: “He (Idris) was saying ‘sir’ to them before. So, it would be awkward for them to start saying ‘sir’ to the acting IGP now. I don’t think it can work. That is why he is insisting that they must go. There is no sentiment about it. It is just an action to move the Force forward, given the new development”.
In fact, it was learned that some of the senior officers agreed to have a meeting with Idris “but he doesn’t like the idea. So, he has turned it down. Due to this, they have agreed to meet the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and former IGP, Mike Okiro “to table their request”.
