Ideye: Life in Ukraine complicated

Nigerian international striker, Brown Ideye, says he required bodyguards to guarantee his safety during the three years he spent in Ukraine playing for Dynamo Kiev.
The 26-year-old scored 33 goals in 74 games for the 13-time Ukrainian champions between 2011 and 2014.
Despite recording remarkable success on the pitch, Ideye revealed that life away from the pitch in Ukraine was pretty complicated.
“I had a meeting with the Dynamo Kiev president and he assured me that every player would have security – especially us foreign boys,” Ideye said.
He added that bodyguards were imperative for the safety of most of the foreign players in the books of the club.
“The local players knew where they could and couldn’t walk, but the foreigners needed security people to make sure they were okay.
“But it was no good me being at the training ground, worrying about my family. So, I talked to my wife and she went home with the kids.
“I always had, at least, one bodyguard with me in Ukraine. It was frightening – like when they broke into my car – but the president knew how to handle issues like that so we were fortunate and none of us got injured.
“You would go out and people would be looking at you because you had a bodyguard. I didn’t feel comfortable with someone walking behind me all the time. It made me feel uneasy,” he said.
Ideye has since moved to England where he has scored seven goals for West Bromwich Albion in all competitions this season.
