The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has stated that the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, remains lawful and is backed by a valid court order.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the commission’s spokesperson, Okor Odey, clarified that the continued custody of the former governor is not based on any new directive but on an existing judicial approval.
According to the ICPC, proceedings held in court on Tuesday were related to an application filed by El-Rufai on March 6, seeking to overturn a remand order granted earlier.
The commission explained that the court did not issue any fresh order regarding detention during the hearing but instead adjourned the case to March 31.
This followed a request by El-Rufai’s legal representatives for more time to respond to submissions made by the commission.
Odey noted that the initial remand order allowed the ICPC to detain and investigate the former governor for 14 days over allegations linked to money laundering and abuse of office.
He added that upon the expiration of the initial order, the commission sought and obtained an extension from the court on March 5 to continue its investigation.
The spokesperson also revealed that a previous attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to nullify an earlier remand order issued in February was dismissed by the court on March 9.
Reaffirming its position, the ICPC maintained that El-Rufai is being held in accordance with the law and under proper judicial authorisation.
The commission stressed that all actions taken align with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
It further reiterated its commitment to due process and professionalism, cautioning against misinformation surrounding the case.
The agency urged the public to rely on official communication and allow legal proceedings to run their course without undue speculation.
