Mark: Inconclusive elections strange, unhealthy for democracy

David Mark

david_mark3Senate President David Mark on Wednesday in Minna, pledged to work for the unity of the country as his contribution towards the nation’s development.

Speaking when he led members of the Alumni of Course 3, Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), on a courtesy call on Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Mark appealed to Nigerians to stop ‘beating the drums of war’..

“The strength of Nigeria is in our unity, not in our division; so let us all work for the unity of the country.

“We urge Nigerians to ensure peace; they should not shout slogan of war because when there is no peace, there will be no development.

“I will work for the unity and peace of the country; we must all work for the unity of the country,’’ he said.

The Senate president described the alumni as a ‘non-governmental’ and ‘non- political’ association, working for the development of Nigeria.

He said that the association awarded scholarships to students and also provided assistance to widows.

He commended Gov. Aliyu for the `tremendous’ work he was doing in Niger, and urged him to do more for the people of the state, whom he said, were still yearning for the dividends of democracy.

In his remarks, Gov. Aliyu described the on-going review of the 1999 constitution by the National Assembly as `cosmetic.’

He suggested that the exercise be stopped and replaced with a `wholesome review’ of the nation’s laws.

The governor commended members of the association for preserving the unity of the country when they were in the Nigeria Army and continuing with their good work even after leaving the service.
