Already an outspoken advocate for football for social change, Jason Roberts, has joined the Homeless World Cup as an Ambassador – as well as a proud supporter of Team Grenada.
“I support the Homeless World Cup because I can testify as to the power of football,” Jason explained. “I know the values of team spirit, collective responsibility, and working as a unit can literally change people’s lives.”
Jason started his football career as a striker with Hayes in 1996 and retired with Reading FC in 2014. Born in London to a Grenadian father and French Guianese mother, Jason played internationally for the Grenadian national team. Since his retirement due to injuries, he has remained involved in the world of football as a pundit and ardently campaigns against racism and for further equality within the sport.
Speaking about why he has chosen to use football as a means of inspiring change, he explained, “Football can speak to people, bridging barriers such as language, race, and religion. The unscripted drama and stories have the ability to unify people around the common love for the world’s greatest sport.”
The Jason Roberts Foundation – one of the Homeless World Cup’s newest National Partners – is a cornerstone of his ongoing commitment to social causes. The Foundation organises football-based social inclusion projects in England and Grenada, particularly for young people who come from disadvantaged areas or face personal challenges, such as disabilities. In 2010, Jason received an MBE in recognition of his contribution to sport in England and Grenada.
“It’s excellent that somebody who has made a name for himself in football has decided to give back. More footballers should follow Jason’s example,” said Homeless World Cup co-founder Mel Young. “He’s walking the walk.”
In addition to lending his voice and support to the Homeless World Cup movement, Jason is hoping to accompany Team Grenada to their first Homeless World Cup tournament in September. “Everyone seems to be inspired by the opportunity to go and play in Amsterdam and participate in the Homeless World Cup,” shared Jason.
“The Homeless World Cup has been working to expand our presence in the Caribbean, so we’re really looking forward to welcoming Jason and Team Grenada to Amsterdam,” added Mel.
