The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider nominating former Nigerian President Dr Goodluck Jonathan for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).

The call was made by APRC Convener, Prof. Edward Agbai, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where he highlighted Jonathan’s leadership experience, democratic credentials and international engagement record.

Agbai argued that Jonathan possesses the qualities needed to lead the global body at a time when the world is facing complex political, economic and security challenges.

APRC highlights Jonathan’s leadership record

According to the group, Jonathan’s tenure as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015 demonstrated his ability to manage national challenges through dialogue, consultation and institutional processes.

Agbai particularly pointed to Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat after the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a major moment in Africa’s democratic development.

He said the peaceful transfer of power strengthened Nigeria’s democratic culture and reflected Jonathan’s commitment to constitutional governance and national stability.

“Jonathan’s acceptance of the election result remains a landmark contribution to democratic governance in Africa,” Agbai said.

International experience cited

The APRC convener said Jonathan has continued to contribute to peacebuilding, democracy promotion and conflict resolution across Africa since leaving office.

He highlighted Jonathan’s involvement in election observation and mediation efforts under organisations including the African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the West African Elders Forum.

Agbai said these engagements have strengthened Jonathan’s experience in international diplomacy and conflict management.

He described the former president as a leader known for encouraging dialogue, consensus building and peaceful resolution of political disagreements.

Call for diplomatic campaign

The APRC urged the Federal Government to begin consultations with African nations and international partners if Nigeria decides to pursue Jonathan’s candidacy for the UN’s top administrative position.

The group said having an African candidate for the role would increase the continent’s influence in global decision-making and strengthen Africa’s voice within international institutions.

The position of UN Secretary-General is one of the most influential diplomatic roles in the world, requiring approval from the UN Security Council before appointment by the General Assembly.
