Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo has awarded N5 million each to two exceptional students who secured second place at the recent national NDDC quiz competition, in recognition of their academic excellence.

The governor made the announcement during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration on Tuesday in Benin, reaffirming his administration’s strong commitment to education and youth development.

The two students, who represented Edo from Itohan Girls’ Grammar School, had earlier clinched first place in the South-South region and went on to place second nationally in the prestigious competition.

“We are proud of their achievement. Edo State celebrates excellence,” Okpebholo stated.

“In future competitions, we will sponsor winners to international platforms.”

The governor also donated two Toyota Hiace buses to Ogbe Secondary School for Boys and India College, Benin, winners of the boys’ and girls’ football finals, respectively, during the 2025 Governor’s Cup.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr Emmanuel Iyamu, in his welcome remarks, stressed the importance of a collective effort in nurturing children.

He urged parents and communities to actively participate in promoting child welfare, and encouraged students to report cases of bullying to foster safer learning environments.

The event’s highlight was the Governor’s Cup 2025 football finals, which saw spirited competition among secondary schools across the state.

India College, Benin, in Oredo Local Government Area (LGA), triumphed in the girls’ final with a 1-0 victory over St. Angela’s Grammar School, Jattu, Estako West LGA of the state.

In the boys’ final, Ogbe Secondary School, Benin, edged out St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode, Estako East LGA, in a thrilling match.

The 2025 Children’s Day celebration marked a vibrant display of academic and athletic talent, reinforcing Edo State’s commitment to youth excellence.
