The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Command, has warned motorists to desist from keeping Petrol in containers in their vehicles to avoid fire disaster.
Mr Anthony Uga, the Sector Commander, gave the warning during a sensitisation programme organised for motorists at Kuto park in Abeokuta on Friday.
Uga said the dangers in keeping fuel inside jericans and stored in vehicles, saying that it was important to as a matter of urgency lecture the motoring public on the dangers of the act.
” The essence of this workshop is to build the conscience of the motorists public in Ogun to avoid carrying fuel in jerican and to say no to night journey , overloading and to install speed limit device because of the inherent benefits .
” We are here to tell them not to carry Petrol in their various vehicles because of the negative effect of it.
“If there are little infractions on the road, the vehicle could burst into flames and could result into loss of lives.
“Once we saw you engage in such act, we stop you from doing that because it negates the mandate of FRSC and we stop at nothing in making sure you do the right thing.
“Once you store this petrol in your car booth, it is against our ethics, it is against the extant regulations of FRSC,” he said.
Uga urged motorists to install speed limit device in their vehicles, saying that the issue of speed limit had become compulsory for all vehicles.
He added that speed limits reduced rate of road traffic crashes on the highways.
Alhaji Taofeek Agbogunleri , representing Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kuto park, lauded the FRSC for the engagement.
He said that the association would continue to talk to his members on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations.
