The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has banned additional constructions on tricycles which many riders carry out to protect the machines against being damaged by other vehicles.
The FRSC Public Education Officer in Jos, Mr Saidu Badamasi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jos that the corps would begin to arrest defaulters from Aug. 1.
The officer said that the construction was illegal, and that the metals used for it could injure passengers and pedestrians.
Many riders in Jos put additional metals in front, back or on all sides of their tricycles popularly known as Keke NAPEP.
Badamasi said that the construction contravened road traffic regulation.
“We observed that tricycle riders within the Jos metropolis keep mounting metals on their tricycles.
“This is an additional construction on the tricycle.
“The National Road Traffic Regulation prohibits one to make any additional construction on his vehicle or tricycle.
“Where you must do anything, you have to meet the FRSC, and inspections will be done on the vehicle to be sure that such a step will not affect safety,’’ he said.
Badamasi said that the additional construction encouraged rough riding.
“Once you drive without any consideration for other road users, certainly, you are bound to cause problems on the roads.
“This is why we directed them to dismantle any additional construction on their tricycles, especially the metals,’’ he said.
He said the FRSC had cautioned more than 500 tricycle riders against the act, and had invited members of the riders’ association to a meeting in that regard.
“We told them to educate their members to desist from such an act, but we are surprised that some had yet to heed to that.
