Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar,  has officially stepped down from his position as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship election.

The resignation was confirmed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, during a briefing with diplomatic correspondents in Abuja.

According to Ebienfa, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in compliance with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective offices to vacate their positions.

The directive mandates ministers, special advisers, and heads of federal agencies to resign on or before March 31, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections

The policy is aligned with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest during the election cycle.

Tuggar’s move signals his intention to run for governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State.

Before his appointment as minister, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany and built a career spanning both the public and private sectors.

The 59-year-old diplomat is widely regarded for his experience in international relations and organisational strategy.

His resignation marks another high-profile political transition as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections.
