FixPolitics Demands National Assembly Reverse 2026 Electoral Act, Make E-Transmission of Results Compulsory

Good governance advocacy group FixPolitics has urged Nigeria’s National Assembly to revisit the recently enacted 2026 Electoral Act, arguing that the law must be amended to make real-time electronic transmission of election results a mandatory requirement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation’s Executive Director, Anthony Ubani, made the call at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, expressing concern that the current version of the law weakens safeguards around the voting process at a time when Nigerians are calling for stronger protections.

Ubani noted that the bill was passed despite significant public pushback, including opposition from civil society organisations, election monitoring groups, and citizens who staged peaceful demonstrations against key provisions of the legislation.

He argued that electronic transmission of results directly from polling units is a critical tool for reducing manipulation, minimising human interference, and strengthening public trust in the electoral process. According to him, any move to dilute this mechanism puts the credibility of future elections at risk and poses a broader threat to democratic stability.

The FixPolitics chief stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to enter another election cycle marred by widespread disputes over results, warning that such a scenario would set the country back significantly.

While calling for urgent legislative action, Ubani also appealed to Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding in their advocacy efforts. He emphasised that the goal is not to create disorder but to push for meaningful reform through civic engagement, sustained pressure, and lawful channels of accountability.

The organisation maintains that only a firm commitment to compulsory, real-time digital result transmission can adequately protect the integrity of the Nigerian vote going forward.
