Forty-four years after one of the most controversial moments in FIFA World Cup history, Algeria finally wrote a new chapter against Austria on football’s grandest stage.
The Desert Foxes battled to a dramatic 3-3 draw on Sunday, a result that secured their passage to the Round of 32 and symbolically closed the wounds of the infamous 1982 “Disgrace of Gijón”.
Inspired by a brace from captain Riyad Mahrez and a crucial strike from Ramiz Belghali, Algeria refused to leave their fate in the hands of others, fighting relentlessly until the final whistle against a determined Austrian side. Mahrez appeared to have delivered a famous victory when he struck deep into stoppage time, only for Austria to respond moments later with a dramatic equalizer.

The significance of the result extends far beyond the scoreline. In 1982, Algeria stunned the football world by defeating West Germany 2-1, becoming the first African nation to defeat a European side at a World Cup. Yet their dream was crushed days later when Austria and West Germany played out the infamous match that eliminated Algeria and sparked global outrage, ultimately forcing FIFA to introduce simultaneous final group-stage kickoffs. With that painful history serving as motivation, the 2026 Desert Foxes arrived determined to take destiny into their own hands. They did exactly that, securing qualification through their own performances and ensuring there would be no repeat of the heartbreak that haunted generations of Algerian football supporters. This time, Algeria marches into the knockout rounds on merit, resilience and belief, carrying the hopes of a continent as they prepare for their next challenge.
