Sepp Blatter has confirmed that he will be running for a fifth term in charge of FIFA – just hours before the cut-off point.
Prospective candidates must submit their nominations before the 11pm deadline on Thursday 29 January.
A message posted on the current leader’s Twitter page read: “This is a key date in the electoral calendar. I’ve made my submission, now the electoral committee follows a process.”
The 78-year-old is the overwhelming favourite to remain in his post, despite growing calls from the wider footballing community for him to stand down.
French former FIFA executive Jerome Champagne, Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordan and former Tottenham winger David Ginola are all set to stand aganst him.
And, following Blatter’s remarks that potential UEFA candidates lack the courage to challenge him, Portuguese legend Luis Figo and president of the Dutch FA Michael van Praag have also put themselves forward.
Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein is expected to receive the backing of the English FA, while the Scottish FA have confirmed that they will endorse Dutchman Van Praag.
The results of the campaign will be announced at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich on May 29, 2015.
