The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute individuals allegedly involved in sexual assaults during a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State
The directive was issued by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, in a statement released in Abuja
The action follows the circulation of viral videos on social media showing alleged cases of harassment and assault during the Alue-Do Festival a traditional event in Isoko North Local Government Area
Expressing concern over the reports, the minister described the incidents as deeply troubling and a violation of human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law.
She commended the Delta State Police Command for its initial response and called for a swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigation to ensure all those involved are identified and brought to justice.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasised that no cultural or traditional practice can justify acts of sexual violence, noting that such offences are clearly prohibited under Nigeria’s laws, including the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act)
She reiterated that sexual assault is a serious criminal offence and must be treated with urgency, with perpetrators held accountable under the law.
The minister also assured that the government would prioritise the protection and welfare of women and girls, particularly in public and communal spaces.
She disclosed plans to collaborate with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide immediate support for victims, including medical care, psychosocial services, and legal assistance.
In addition, the ministry will engage traditional leaders and community stakeholders to address harmful practices and prevent future occurrences.
The Federal Government further urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could aid investigations and ensure justice for victims.
