The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to arraign six individuals accused of plotting a coup, as the case comes up before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The matter, listed before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, is scheduled for hearing and appears on the court’s Wednesday cause list.
According to court documents filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the defendants face charges bordering on treason, terrorism, and related offences
The six suspects named in the case include retired Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Ibrahim Gana retired Navy Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.
Although former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, is not listed as a defendant, he is reportedly at large in connection with the case.
As of the time of reporting, only Abdulkadir Sani, identified as a cleric from Zaria, Kaduna State, was present in court, while the remaining suspects had yet to be produced.
The charge, filed on April 20 by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, **Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), alleges that the defendants were involved in a conspiracy to undermine Nigeria’s constitutional order.
Prosecutors claim the accused persons planned actions intended to destabilise the government and challenge the authority of the President.
The charges are said to be punishable under Section 37(2) of the Criminal Code, alongside provisions of laws relating to terrorism and financial crimes.
Additional allegations include failure to report critical security intelligence and involvement in financial transactions linked to terrorism financing
At the time this report was filed, proceedings had not yet commenced, as the case was still awaiting call in court.
The arraignment is expected to mark the beginning of formal legal proceedings in a case that carries significant national security implications.
