The Federal Government has prohibited the operation of commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (keke marwa) on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, as part of new measures to protect the infrastructure and ensure road safety.

The directive was issued by the Federal Ministry of Works through its Lagos State Controller, Mr Olufemi Dare, in a statement on Sunday.

Dare explained that the restriction was introduced to prevent damage and misuse of the newly constructed coastal highway, describing it as a critical national asset requiring strict protection.

He said the policy was aimed at ensuring the durability and long-term sustainability of the highway.

“The decision is necessary to preserve the road and ensure its long-term sustainability,” he said.

The ministry also warned against indiscriminate parking of heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles along the highway and its bridges across Lagos State.

It further prohibited the dumping of refuse along the highway corridors, describing the practice as dangerous and unacceptable.

Dare noted that offenders would face strict enforcement actions as authorities intensify monitoring and compliance operations.

According to him, signage indicating the restrictions has already been installed at strategic points along the highway.

He added that enforcement teams and task force officials would be deployed to ensure full compliance with the new regulations.

The Federal Controller of Works described the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway as a “world-class infrastructure” that must be properly maintained to serve its purpose.

He urged road users and residents to comply with the directive, stressing that collective responsibility was needed to preserve public infrastructure.

“The preservation of this facility will enhance its lifespan and maintain its value to Nigerians,” he said.
