Abia State farmers have endorsed the candidature of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the PDP candidate for the governorship of Abia State in the April 11 election.
The resolution for the endorsement was passed by the farmers at a stakeholders meeting organised under the auspices of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (ALFAN), Abia State Chapter, in conjunction with Youths in Agriculture Programme (YEAP).
Presenting the resolution, the Chairman of ALFAN in Abia State, Chief Dunlop Okoro, noted that Abia State, being a largely agrarian state, the farmers constituted the bulk of the voting population in the state and whoever they endorsed usually win the governorship.
He noted that apart from the PDP Governorship Candidate in Abia State, the farmers had also resolved to support President Goodluck Jonathan and other PDP candidates in senatorial and House of Assembly elections in Abia State.
Also speaking, the Cordinator of Youths in Agriculture Programme, Abia State Chapter, Mr. Obinna Ndukwe Ibiam, noted that having taken the time to assess all the governorship candidates in Abia State, it was the conclusion of Youths in Agriculture in Abia State that Ikpeazu had the best plans for the development of the agricultural sector in the state.
Governor T.A. Orji, represented at the event by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Okezie Onwutebe, assured the farmers of the continuous commitment of the State Government to the improvement of their fortunes.
An obviously elated Ikpeazu thanked the farmers for the endorsement and promised not to dissapoint them.
In a related development, Mr. Nnamdi Ezeigbo, Managing Director of the leading Telecommunications and Computer Systems Marketing Company in Nigeria, Slot Systems Ltd, paid a solidarity visit to Ikpeazu.
Ezeigbo, from Ubakala in Umuahia South LGA in Abia State, while speaking during the visit, hinged his decision to come and identify with Ikpeazu on his realisation that the only way Abians, who have excelled in diverse fields of endeavour can best contribute to the development of the state, is by coming closer home and partnering with government.
Ezeigbo, who expressed surprise at the actual revenue accruals to Abia State, disclosed that he always thought it was much more and charged Ikpeazu to run an open government when he assumes office as governor on May 29 so that at all times, Abians, wherever they are, will be fully briefed on developments in the state.
According to the Slot MD, “Slot has come to invest more in Abia State because Abia is in safe hands and with Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, good governance will be assured and development will thrive”.
In his response, Ikpeazu thanked Ezeigbo for the visit and called on other entrepreneurs of Abia extraction to emulate him and come home to begin to take steps to identify with government so that the opportunity would be there to harness their extensive experiences for the betterment of Abia State.
