The decision to name Bruno Fernandes as the 2025/26 Premier League Player of the Season has triggered widespread debate among football fans, with opinions divided over both the award and his long-term legacy.

The announcement, made on May 23, followed Fernandes’ influential role in helping Manchester United secure a third-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder emerged as the winner after topping a combined voting process involving fans, club captains, and football analysts.

Fernandes delivered an outstanding campaign, registering 21 assists and nine league goals, contributing to 30 goal involvements across the season.

He also set a new Premier League record for the most assists in a single season, surpassing the previous mark of 20 jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The record-breaking assist came on the final day against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fernandes further underlined his creativity with 136 chances created, matching De Bruyne’s 2019/20 tally as the second-highest in league history, behind Mesut Özil, who holds the record with 146.

He also recorded 32 big chances and 88 opportunities created from open play, reinforcing his role as one of the league’s most influential playmakers.

Despite the impressive statistics, reactions among Nigerian fans in Lagos have been mixed.

Some supporters backed the award, while others argued that David Raya, Arsenal’s goalkeeper, was more deserving after playing a key role in his team’s title-winning campaign.

A Manchester City fan, Kolawole Abass, said Raya’s contribution to Arsenal’s success made him a stronger candidate, although he acknowledged Fernandes’ consistency throughout the season.

Similarly, Liverpool supporter Chijindu Umezeoke defended Fernandes’ victory, noting that his record-breaking performance had already secured his place in league history.

However, Umezeoke argued that Fernandes still needed major trophies to be considered among Premier League legends.

An Arsenal fan, Oluwaseun Alamu, disagreed with the award outcome, suggesting that Raya and Igor Thiago delivered stronger individual performances over the season.

Other fans highlighted Fernandes’ impact despite Manchester United’s inconsistent form earlier in the campaign.

Chelsea supporter Olufemi Wilson described the midfielder as exceptional, praising his ability to maintain high performance levels under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick.

Wilson added that Fernandes’ assist record could be regarded as one of the standout achievements in recent Premier League history.

Another Arsenal fan, Henry Arikpo, said that while Fernandes’ season was remarkable, winning a league title would be essential before he could be classified as a true legend of the competition.

Meanwhile, Manchester United supporter Daniel Bamidele strongly defended the midfielder, insisting that Fernandes carried the team during a challenging season.

The ongoing debate highlights the broader question of how individual excellence is weighed against team success in determining football’s top honours and long-term legacy.
