Misconduct: Police Service Commission dismisses 10 officers, demotes eight

Nigeria Police Force

Family members of a woman politician in Ondo State, Mrs. Ronke Adelugba, have accused some officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) posted to Ala Police Station in Akure, the state capital, of killing her.
According to one of her sons, Henry, the policemen tried to force themselves into her house at the weekend to arrest her children ‘for no reason’ and when she refused, two of them hit her on the head with gun butt and she died on the spot.
He said policemen were in the habit of raiding the raid, arrest innocent people and collect between N5,000 and N10,000 for bail before releasing them.
Sensing that the same fate was about to be meted to her children, she refused them entry and she was killed in the process.
But the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wale Ogodo, defended his men, saying Mrs. Adelugba, the Woman Leader of Accord Party in Ward 5, Akure South Local Government Area, collapsed and died after the policemen left her No. 1, Akinyemi Street, off Ijoka Road, Akure residence.
Freedom Online learned that the policemen invaded the area in a white police hilux van (NPF 4236 B), looking for people smoking Indian hemp.
When they could not find anybody, they went to Mrs. Adelugba’s house.
She was said to have told them that she lived there with her children but the policemen insisted on forcing their way in.
She resisted and this led to the beating.
On sensing that she had died, they fled.
Some residents mobilised and took the body to the police station.
Senior officers around later took the body to the mortuary of State Specialist Hospital, Akure.
Henry described the way his mother was killed as inhuman, vowing that family members would seek justice in the law court.
Ogodo assured that a post mortem would be carried out to determine the cause of death.
