There was pandemonium in Enugu, Enugu State on Friday night following an explosion which affected a commercial (internal/town service) bus.
The bus was heading to New Haven area of the Enugu metropolis when it was hit by what is suspected to be a locally-made bomb at UBA Bus Stop, close to Otigba Junction.
Some passengers sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to Mother of Christ Hospital.
The driver of the bus said that he had earlier suspected one of the passengers and queried what was in a bag he dropped in the boot of the bus.
The passenger was said to have kept mute as he jumped into the front seat of the vehicle and the driver on his part failed to probe further.
Freedom Online learned that the prime suspect was arrested by the police.
The bus has been removed by a team of anti-bomb squad from the Enugu State Police Command.
Meanwhile, the state Police Command has declared, in another incident, that its operatives only picked a suspicious object at Old Ngwo Road in Enugu, and not a bomb.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement entitled: “No Bomb Explosion in Enugu State: Disregard Mischief Makers Misinformation’’, said that the command’s bomb explosive specialists only picked up a suspicious object in the metropolis that looked like an explosive for further analysis.
“The command through its operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Department have commenced full analysis of the object picked near a bush close to a fence of a building located at Old Ngwo Road in Enugu today.
“It was gathered that through information received that an object suspected to be explosive ordinance was found as a man was clearing the bush near the said fence at 9:30 a.m. today.
“Our operatives promptly got to the scene and recovered the object which is currently being analysed for further necessary action,’’ he said.
In a related development, explosions, on Saturday morning, rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Security agents were seen moving to mosques, schools and polling centres to secure the areas.
It is not yet clear if there were casualties in the explosions.
