Manchester City highlighted their early-season credentials by maintaining their 100% winning record after three Premier League games, but had to cling on to leave newly promoted Coventry still searching for their first point of the campaign.
The result was ultimately a satisfying one for City manager, Enzo Maresca, after giving debuts to Iliman Ndiaye and £125m signing Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentine drafted in minutes before kick-off after Nico O’Reilly sustained an injury in the warm-up.
City’s star striker Erling Haaland was the match-winner, powerfully heading home the only goal of the afternoon after Antoine Semenyo dug out a cross to the far post. Fernandez played a key part in the goal with a slide-rule pass to the Ghanaian.
Tottenham are still waiting for their first Premier League win of the season after a scrappy draw at Nottingham Forest.
Roberto de Zerbi’s expensively assembled side failed to have a shot on target until the 81st minute at the City Ground to continue their poor start in the top flight.
They avoided defeat after Neco Williams’ second-half goal was ruled out, the full-back adjudged to have bundled the ball in with his arm after some calamitous Tottenham defending.
Micky van de Ven nodded Spurs’ best chance wide but the visitors, who started Savio and Omar Marmoush for the first time together, were unable to find a breakthrough.
Including add-ons, Tottenham’s summer outlay is over £350m and more is expected from the team after three winless top-flight games.
Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell scored on his Crystal Palace return as the Eagles came from behind twice to earn a 3-2 win at Fulham.
Chilwell, 29, re-signed for Palace on Tuesday on a free transfer from Strasbourg, having spent the second half of the 2024-25 season there on loan from Chelsea.
Within three minutes of replacing fellow left wing-back Tyrick Mitchell off the bench, who scored Palace’s first two goals, Chilwell latched onto a loose ball as Fulham failed to clear an attack from Pierre Sage’s side and thumped the ball home.
Victory for Palace sees Sage claim his first win as head coach after he replaced Oliver Glasner over the summer.
Meanwhile, Fulham have lost three straight league games since the arrival of ex-Real boss Arbeloa.
Also, Leeds were denied a first Premier League win at American Express Stadium as Brighton came from behind to earn a share of the spoils.
Daniel Farke’s side appeared on course for their first victory at the Seagulls in more than 17 years when Jayden Bogle opened the scoring early in the first half.
But after missing a host of opportunities to put the game beyond the home side, Leeds were punished late in the second half when Luka Vuskovic headed home his first goal for Albion since his club-record move from Tottenham this summer.
The result keeps the teams neck and neck in the table, with Leeds eighth and Brighton ninth after three matches of the new campaign.
