Enugu NUJ elects Udekwe Chairman

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Enugu State Council, on Tuesday, elected new officers to paddle the affairs of the union for the next three years.

In a keenly contested election, Comrade Sam Udekwe of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) won the chairmanship position.
Udekwe, who hails from Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, broke the jinx of over 50 years to become the first journalist from Enugu North zone (Nsukka side) to become the chairman of the NUJ, Enugu state council.

Announcing the result, the Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Lawrence Njoku, said that Udekwe pulled the highest number of lawful votes cast to emerge the winner of the chairmanship position while Amaka Agbo Nzekwe came second.

Njoku, who is also the chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, said that Udekwe scored 157 votes while Amaka Agbo got 90 votes.

He said that the process was without rancour and very transparent. He thanked the members of the council for proper conduct.

In his acceptance speech, Udekwe described his victory as ” a new dawn for the NUJ,Enugu state Council”. He charged members to support the incoming executives.

Other members of the newly elected Executives are Regis Anikworji, Vice Chairman, Emma Acha, Secretary, Ifeoma Amuta ,Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Adaku Agbala, Fin. Sec. Michael Ilediagu, Auditor, Amaka Uchenna Eze.

Jubilation followed Udekwe’s victory. Jubiliant members described his victory as “well deserving”. Some said, “Udekwe has good leadership qualities. He is a man of peace”.
They expressed the hope that his administration would bring desired transformation to the Council.
