The Enugu State Government has constituted Development Centres across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), in a move aimed at strengthening community participation and bringing governance closer to residents.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, announced the appointments in a statement issued in Enugu on Wednesday.
According to Onyia, Gov. Peter Mbah approved the appointments to fill vacancies in the various Development Centres.
He said the centres were intended to provide communities with a stronger platform to participate in government programmes, policy discussions and local development initiatives.
The SSG said the move would also promote broader representation, improve government responsiveness and strengthen engagement between communities and the state administration.
Centres established across LGAs
Onyia said the newly constituted Development Centres cover several LGAs, including Aninri, Awgu, Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Isi-Uzo and Nkanu East.
Each centre, he explained, comprises an administrator, secretary and members drawn from communities within its area of jurisdiction.
In Aninri LGA, the government constituted the Aninri East, Aninri North, Aninri South and Aninri West Development Centres.
In Awgu, the centres are Anike, Awgu, Mbanabo North and Mbanabo South, while Enugu East has Enugu East Central, Enugu East, Iyiukwu and Ujodo West Development Centres.
The government also established four centres each in Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North and Igbo-Eze South, while Isi-Uzo has three centres.
Onyia said the appointments were drawn from different communities, wards and development areas to promote wider grassroots representation.
Government expects stronger community-government link
The SSG urged the appointees to take their responsibilities seriously and contribute to the effective coordination of development activities within their respective areas.
He said the centres were expected to strengthen the connection between local communities and government while ensuring that residents had a meaningful role in the state’s development agenda.
The development comes as the Enugu State Government seeks to expand community-level participation in governance and ensure that government programmes reach residents more effectively.
