Emergency dept. issues evacuation order over life-threatening bushfire in Western Australia

 Residents of a town in Western Australia (WA) were on Wednesday afternoon ordered to immediately evacuate due to a life-threatening bushfire.

An emergency alert issued by the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) after 2:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday said that people in the southern parts of the town of Collie.

It is about 160 km south of Perth, were in danger, and it needed to act immediately to survive.

It said that a bushfire that was first reported around 1 p.m. on Wednesday poses a threat to lives and homes.

People in the area have been ordered to leave in a northerly direction if it is safe to do so.

Anyone who cannot leave has been told to get ready to shelter in a room with running water and a clear exit.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) weather station in East Collie recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Collie had a population of 8,812 people at the time of the last national census in 2021.
