REPRIEVE came the way of pupils in Ekiti State on Tuesday as their teachers called off their 31-day strike.
The strike was called off after they agreed to accept 16 per cent out of the 27.5 per cent Teachers Salary Scheme offered them by the state government.
The teachers, however, called on the state government to abide by its promise of paying the remaining percentage as soon as possible.
A statement by the State NUT Chairman, Mr. Samuel Kayode Akosile, said the teachers agreed with the 16 per cent proposal made by the state government to ensure a quick resolution of the industrial crisis.
Akosile said the teachers took the painful decision as a mark of respect for the well-meaning indigenes of the state who intervened in the resolution of the matter.
He said government should see the gesture as an act of patriotism and repay them with utmost respect and recognition.
Commissioner for Education, Mr. Kehinde Ojo, praised the teachers for conducting themselves responsibly and with maturity during the strike.
