Hajia Lateefah Yusuf, the Proprietress of a private school in Ilorin, has appealed to government at all levels to implement special salary scale for elementary school teachers in the country to boost education.
She made the call while speaking on the sidelines of the 1st Graduation and End of the Session Ceremony of Tranquil and Trust International School, Ilorin, on Sunday.
She decried the poor salary structure for teachers, especially in public primary and secondary schools, stressing that the development was affecting productivity in the sector.
According to Yusuf, who is the proprietress of the school, the proposed special package will make teaching more attractive and rewarding, when teachers are well remunerated.
She therefore advised governments to place premium on the salaries and welfare of teachers in Nigeria at primary and post-primary levels.
Also speaking, Mr Tade Zikrullah, the Head Master of the school, described elementary education as the foundation of learning and education for any country.
He emphasized the need to make sure the foundation of learning in Nigeria is strong through effective funding and placing more attention on primary and secondary schools.
Zikrullah described elementary education as the foundation of inculcating permanent literacy and numeracy, and the ability to communicate effectively for Nigerian children.
He also appealed to government for free education, books and other necessary school tools for the children.
The headmaster explained that the school lay emphasis on children developing manipulative skills in mathematics and other subjects together with skills acquisition at their tender age.
