DSS Asks Court to Reject Sowore’s No-Case Submission in Cyberbullying Trial

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss the no-case submission filed by Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters. Sowore is facing trial for allegedly making a false claim against President Bola Tinubu.

The DSS’ counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, told Justice Mohammed Umar that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Sowore through its witnesses. Kehinde argued that Sowore’s no-case submission should be dismissed, urging the court to order him to enter his defense.

Sowore is accused of cyberbullying President Tinubu by calling him a “criminal” in a post made on his social media accounts. The DSS filed a two-count amended charge, FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, against Sowore. However, Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On the other hand, Sowore’s counsel, Abubakar, argued that the prosecution failed to establish a connection between his client and the alleged offenses. He called for the charges to be dismissed, claiming that a prima facie case had not been made against Sowore. According to Abubakar, the prosecution had not called vital witnesses, which weakened their case.

After both parties adopted their respective positions, Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the case to May 8, 2026, for a ruling on the no-case submission.

The DSS alleges that Sowore’s post, in which he referred to President Tinubu as a “criminal,” violated the law, prompting the two-count charge. The prosecution claims that Sowore’s actions constitute a case of cyberbullying, while Sowore’s defense maintains that no substantial evidence links him to the accusations.
