There was drama in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Thursday as Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s convoy of seven vehicles was blocked from entering the Government House by a detachment of anti-riot policemen.
The road leading directly to the Government House was blocked by the policemen with three vehicles.
It was not only the governor and members of his entourage – Conference of Former Speakers – that were affected by the blockade.
Residents of Old GRA were also prevented from entering or leaving their houses and offices for hours.
Some patients and their relatives going to or leaving the popular Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital were also affected.
Among the former speakers was Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, former speaker of Lagos State.
He described the incident as an act of impunity.
Rivers State Information Commissioner, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, also condemned the police action.
Amaechi, who led the former speakers on a tour of projects in various parts of the state, was dressed in white.
He was unruffled for the 20 minutes his convoy was stuck on the road.
Security details attached to the governor challenged the policemen but they were adamant, saying they were acting on orders from above.
To avoid a breakdown of law and order, Amaechi ordered his security details to take another route to the Government House.
Eventually, the convoy took another route to get to the Government House.
