Dr. Chike Akunyili, Proprietor and Chief Medical Director of St. Leo’s Hospital, described as one of the largest medical institutions in Enugu, was on Tuesday evening shot dead along Enugu–Onitsha old road, Nkpor Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
He was the husband of former Minister of Information and Communications and former Director-General of the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili.
He was killed seven years after his wife’s death.
The foremost physician and avid lover of sports, especially tennis, was said to be on his way back from a meeting of the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA) held at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha organised by UNAA, Onitsha branch where the late Dora was honoured with an award when his vehicle was attacked.
A security source said: “He was killed along with his driver and police orderly. Three others were also killed”.
It was learned that at the meeting, he made a donation of half a million naira to the association. He was there with his son, Obum, now working with Anambra State Government.
A source at the meeting said: “We saw them off to the car and it was emotional when Obum hugged him tight as both of them separated to join their respective vehicles. Obum was in a white Hilux while the man was in a big Jeep.
“It was a very big problem yesterday at NKpor area in the evening following the sudden shooting of Chike by yet to be identified gunmen.
“The people were in black attire and as soon as they came down from the vehicle, they started shooting which made people around to scamper for safety.
“By the time the attack was over, six persons including Prof. Akunyili’s husband were killed’’.
