Africa’s richest woman and founder of Famfa Oil, Apostle Folorunsho Alakija, has encouraged Nigerian women to remain resilient in the face of rejection, urging them to pursue their goals with determination and faith.
She gave the advice during a leadership session held at Eko Hotel, Lagos, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, organised by Optiva Capital Partners
Alakija emphasised that women should not allow gender barriers or setbacks to limit their ambitions, stressing that persistence and courage are essential for success.
Reflecting on her personal journey, she described how her rise from a modest background to becoming one of Africa’s most influential business leaders was driven by discipline, faith, and consistent effort.
She recounted how her early education in the United Kingdom and experiences in a large family helped shape her worldview and prepared her for future challenges.
Alakija revealed that although she initially aspired to study law, she was directed into a secretarial course—an experience she later recognised as foundational to her career growth.
Her professional journey, she explained, spanned roles in administration, banking, fashion design, and eventually the oil and gas industry.
She highlighted that her breakthrough in the oil sector came after years of persistence in securing an oil prospecting licence, despite repeated setbacks.
According to her, success requires qualities such as focus, integrity, continuous learning, and effective use of time and talent.
Alakija also stressed the importance of giving back to society, noting that wealth and influence should be used to uplift others rather than create divisions.
Speaking at the event, Dr Amaka Okeke, Executive Director of Business Development at Optiva Capital Partners, called for stronger collaboration among women.
She said the platform was designed to foster meaningful conversations, networking, and shared growth among women, beyond surface-level success narratives.
Okeke added that the theme of the event, “Give to Gain,”reflects the sacrifices and contributions women make daily in their personal and professional lives.
