Customs revenue dips in April

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Command, on Wednesday said that it generated N20.7 billion revenue in April as against N32.3 billion it generated in March.
The information is contained in the Command’s revenue report made available by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Ekpa.
It said that the amount generated was N11.6 billion lower in April when compared to that of March.
The breakdown in the report showed that N10.6 billion was generated into the Federation Account in April.
This amount was N5.1 billion lower than the N15.7 billion collected under the same account in March, it said.
According to the report, N10 billion was generated into the Non-Federation Account in April, which was a drop from the N16. 6 billion generated into the same account in March.
The document indicated that collections generated into the account were from the five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) and the seven per cent from Port Levy.
The other levies under the account include: the one per cent Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme; Rice Levy, Sugar Levy, Wheat flour, Cigarette and Iron levies.
The report also stated that N71.3 million was collected from the Negotiable Duty Credit Certificate in April, as against N278 million collected from the same scheme in March.
This showed a shortfall of N206.7 million, it said.
The Controller of the Command, Eporwei Edike, attributed the drop in the revenue generated by the command in April to the effect of market forces.
