Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has appealed to stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to allow the party’s crises to derail the country’s hard-earned democracy.
Chairman of the Sokoto State chapter of CNPP, Alhaji Abba Sidi, said on Monday in Sokoto that the current political stalemate within the party was contributing in overheating the nation’s polity. “We should be careful so as not to truncate our hard-earned democracy because of some greedy politicians who see elective positions as the only way to serve the people,” he said. He said that the intervention of former heads of state and prominent leaders would pave the way for thorough reconciliation in the party, for the over-all political development of the country. He said that the future generation of Nigerians would hold the current leaders responsible if the political dispensation derailed. ” There are many ways one can contribute towards the nation’s development, not really being elected. “The recent Nigerian Governors’ Forum election and the Rivers House of Assembly crises are not in the best interest of democracy.” He also called for more political tolerance and understanding among politicians for peace and political development to prevail. Sidi said the nation needed peace for the government at all levels to implement policies and programmes that would enhance the well-being of Nigerians.
