A former Super Eagles Coach, Christian Chukwu, on Monday, said that the Super Eagles would be strong contenders for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy in South Africa.

The tournament will kick-off on January 11, with the Eagles opening their campaign against Mali.

Chukwu said that in spite of the Eagles first appearance in the tournament, they have equal chance as bookmakers’ favourites.

“I believe we have assembled a very good team that will contend strongly for the trophy but they will need to work very hard to achieve that.

“I think winning the trophy is a 50/50 thing. Yes we are making our first appearance but I believe we also have all it takes to perform well,” Chukwu said.

He also commended the team’s technical crew and the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) for engaging the team in some friendly matches that would enhance their performance.

According to him, I think they are on track, especially with the number of friendly matches they have played so far.

“The team’s performance has been improving, the technical crew and all stakeholders are doing a good job in assisting the team prepare well,” he said.

The Eagles recently played a 2-2 draw with Glo Premier League champions, Kano Pillars and defeated Ethiopia on January 4 in a friendly encounter.

The CHAN tournament, which is in its third edition, is a competition that is organised for football players based in Africa.
