Chaos broke out at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos West Senatorial District primaries held in Alimosho Local Government Area on Monday, leaving 15 people injured, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed.
CSP Aduroja Olurotimi, Officer in Charge of the Command Tactical Team in Egbeda, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the injured were promptly taken to hospitals for medical care.
“The clash involved rival factions within the same party, but officers and other security personnel quickly intervened to restore order,” Olurotimi said, adding that no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Eyewitnesses said the unrest started around 1:00 p.m.while party members were being called to cast their votes. The altercation led to broken chairs, shattered glass doors, and windows at the Alimosho LGA secretariat.
Several party members, including women, were injured by glass shards, prompting some to flee the venue. Iya Ajoke, an APC member, said she would avoid future primaries unless safety could be ensured, while Mr. Ojo Aina expressed disappointment over the unnecessary disruption of the voting process.
Mrs. Mistura Alao, another party faithful, criticized the lack of control by security operatives, stating that the incident undermined confidence in the party’s election process. Mr. Ajala Umar, who sustained minor injuries, also voiced concerns over future primaries.
After the situation stabilized, APC leaders in Alimosho called on members to resume voting. However, only a few returned, while most refused to continue, highlighting ongoing tensions within the party.
