Card reader: Court refuses to restrain INEC

Those seeking to use the judiciary to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from using card readers for the March 28 and April 11 elections got a hard knock on Friday from a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court declined to stop INEC from using the card as Justice Ademola Adeniyi refused to issue an interim order of injunction, stopping the electoral body from employing the technology for the poll.
The application was filed by a senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State,‎ Waliu Taiwo.
However, the court summoned INEC and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, to appear before it on April 24 for their addresses on the legality or otherwise of the use of card readers for a general election.
The court, however, said that if ‎it eventually ascertains that the use of card readers was illegal and unconstitutional, it will not ‎hesitate to annul the outcome of the elections.
