In a surprising turn of events, Abdullahi Askira, the Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, has officially withdrawn from the 2027 senatorial race. Askira, who had previously launched a campaign for the Southern Borno Zone seat, announced his decision at a press conference in Maiduguri on April 30, 2026.

Standing alongside a large crowd of supporters and influential figures in the state, Askira made it clear that his decision was made after extensive consultations and discussions with key stakeholders, including Borno’s Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum. In his statement, Askira emphasized that his withdrawal was in the best interest of his party, the Southern Borno Zone, and Borno State as a whole.

“I have decided to withdraw from the senatorial race after careful reflection and meaningful dialogues with the Governor and other party leaders. This decision is to ensure that our party and Southern Borno continue to thrive. I fully endorse Senator Ali Ndume to represent us in the Senate and urge my supporters to back his campaign,” Askira stated.

Askira, who has served as a member of the Borno State Assembly since 2007 and was elected Deputy Speaker in 2023, expressed his commitment to supporting Ndume’s bid for re-election. The incumbent Senator, Ali Ndume, has represented the Southern Borno Zone in the Senate for several years, and Askira’s decision is seen as a strategic move to solidify party unity ahead of the upcoming elections.
