Bomb rocks INEC centre in Enugu; Card reader embarrasses Jonathan, refuses to work in Ogun, Osun, Lagos; security agents harass APC chiefs in Rivers, Sokoto; PDP member killed in Osun

As more than 56 million voters are expected to exercise their franchise on Saturday, a bomb explosion rocked the Old Women Training Centre, Enugu just before officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were about going to the venue with electoral materials.
The centre is one of the venues listed by INEC for accreditation of voters.
The bomb destroyed the temporary structure set up for the accreditation. Although nobody died, electoral officials ran helter skelter as security officials immediately cordoned off the area.
The state Police boss visited the venue and announced a beef-up of security in the area.
In Otuoke, Bayelsa State, President Goodluck Jonathan was embarrassed by the card reader.
For more than 30 minutes, Jonathan was left standing as the card reader refused to work. Two card readers brought to salvage the situation also refused to work.
The heat under the kiosk was so much that the president’s wife, Patience, and his mother, Eunice, had to resort to using hand fans.
Although the accreditation was to have started by 8am, the president didn’t get to the polling unit until after 9am.
Jonathan was seen talking to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on phone, apparently expressing his frustration.
After the embarrassment, the president said: “There may be issues because this is the first time we are using card readers. President Jonathan is just one voter. If nationally, it is going on well, it is okay. There may be a delay. I cannot speak for INEC. I am committed to peaceful elections. If I can endure, I plead with other Nigerians to be patient. We all want a free and fair election. The whole world is interested in this election. Nigerians should not instigate violence. Let’s be peaceful”.
There were mixed feelings all over the country as Nigerians trooped out to exercise their franchise.
At Polling Unit 004, Imasayi, Yewa North, Ogun State,
scores of people were already on queue before the electoral officer told them that the card reader has refused to work. There would have been a breakdown of law and order if not for the intervention of some elders in the area. But the voters vowed not to leave the queue until another card reader was brought to accredit them.
It was the same situation in unit 4, ward 4, Olorunda council, Osun State as the card reader packed up.
In Ikirun, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yomi Ademola, was shot dead by unidentified hoodlums.
Freedom Online learned that Ademola was a strong member of the APC before he defected to the PDP.
He was killed in Idi-Oro area of the town.
Three suspects had been arrested.
Also, the card reader refused to work in Oja Oba, Ward 2, unit 2 in Iragbiji, Boripe council.
One of the INEC officials in the area said: “We were given the wrong card reader and that was the reason it could not read the PVC validly. We have called our supervisor, intimating him of the mix-up as another unit would be facing same challenges because the card reader given to them belongs to a different unit.”
At Eripa, Boluwaduro local government, it was the same situation as the card reader could not work.
At one of the polling units in Oregun, Lagos State, as voters were getting agitated, the electoral officer was seen looking for signal for the card reader.
In Ikorodu, an adhoc staff was finding it hard to log in to the card reader
It was another story in Rivers State as electoral materials meant for Kula town were hijacked by hoodlums. This happened in Akuku Toru council.
On Friday night, some elements claiming to be working for the Nigerian Army told the Chairman of Ngo- Andoni council, Esuku Esuku, to leave the area immediately or he will be killed. It is generally believed it was part of the massive intimidation of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in the South-South state.
Also as at 8:50am, there were no INEC officials and electoral materials at a polling unit on Ahmadu Bello, Adetokunbo Ademola junction, Victoria Island. Only party agents were seen and, in the absence of doing anything, they were seen openly canvassing for votes for President Goodluck Jonathan and Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.
On Banire Street, Surulere, only two uniformed officers were seen. No INEC official. It was the same situation at polling booths on Somosu Street. Aguda. Surulere.
In a related development, INEC postponed elections in 11 Federal Constituencies in Jigawa State and two Federal Constituencies in Delta State due to shortage of electoral materials.
In Sokoto State, some APC chieftains were arrested for no reason.
Those arrested included Alhaji Mu’azu Zabira, Alhaji Abubakar Kani and others.
