THERE was anger in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday, following a report that 10 traders from the Bodija Market in the ancient city were killed in Mugunu, Borno State by members of Boko Haram.
Those killed were Seye Adegboyega, Jelili Popoola, Ojo Mosobalaje, Fatai Kareem, Femi Oyetunde, Ninalowo Saheed, Saburu Lanlehin, Lekan Oladokun, Sola Adeoye and Nurudeen Lawal.
Two other traders, Alhaji Ibrahim Ademola and Taoheed Azeez, narrowly escaped being killed.
When the story broke, traders didn’t believe it. Then, disbelief turned to tears, later anger.
They vowed to avenge the death of their colleagues.
Security was beefed up immediately around Sabo area to forestall an attack on Northerners who live there.
It was learnt that majority of those killed were selling beans and had gone to Borno State to purchase bags of beans but met their untimely death at Mugunu.
Some security agents were seen at the market on Monday, holding meetings with traders on the need to maintain peace and allow the government flush out the killers.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the market, Mr Akeem Emiola, said the traders were informed of the killing by one of those who escaped.
“Since then, we have been making contact with family members of the deceased,” he said.
Emiola disclosed that their corpses would be received on Tuesday by the executives at the Oyo end of the Ibadan /Ilorin Road.
