The Niger Delta Youth Network (NDYN) has praised the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for responding swiftly to concerns surrounding the condition of the Benin-Asaba Expressway.
The group’s National President, Scott Ogunseri, gave the commendation in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, describing the minister’s decision to personally inspect the road as a sign of commitment and responsible leadership.
Ogunseri said Umahi’s visit to the project site, engagement with road users and direct assessment of the challenges facing motorists demonstrated a willingness to seek practical solutions rather than rely only on official reports.
He said the minister’s action had renewed hope among thousands of Nigerians who depend on the major route daily for transportation, business activities and movement between regions.
According to NDYN, the Benin-Asaba corridor is more than just a road project, as it serves as an important economic connection between the South-South and South-East regions.
Ogunseri noted that the poor condition of the road has affected transportation, commercial activities, security and the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians who use the route.
He, however, urged that the minister’s intervention should move beyond discussions and result in immediate and lasting action.
The youth group called on the Federal Government, the Ministry of Works, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), contractors and other stakeholders involved in the project to work together towards completing the road.
“We are not looking for blame; we are looking for results,” Ogunseri said.
He urged organisations connected to the project to take responsibility and respond positively to Umahi’s efforts to resolve outstanding challenges.
Ogunseri commended the minister for listening to concerns from road users and encouraged him to maintain the momentum until motorists can travel safely along the route.
“The Minister has renewed our hope. Now, every stakeholder must renew commitment to delivering the Benin-Asaba road for Nigerians,” he said.
The NDYN president also pledged the group’s support for genuine efforts aimed at completing, rehabilitating and improving critical infrastructure across the Niger Delta region.
He called for stronger cooperation among stakeholders, greater community involvement and renewed commitment towards delivering projects that improve the lives of Nigerians.
