Barber kills cousin at aunt’s burial

A Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a 21-year-old barber, Ugbede Daniel, in prison custody for allegedly stabbing to death Ebenezer Agada, 28, at the burial ceremony of their aunt.
The Chief Magistrate, Levi Animoku, said the offence of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code attracts a death penalty.
Animoku said that the offence was not bailable and remanded him at Federal Prisons, Ankpa.
He also transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Court in Ankpa, and adjourned the case till September 27 for mention.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Tuesday Ganagana, had told the court that the crime was committed on August 25, at Egahimotu-Ogugu in Olamaboro Local Government of Kogi and reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Okpo and CIID, Lokoja.
Ganagana said the complainant, Joseph Daniel, had reported that a quarrel had come up between the deceased and the accused during the burial of their aunt, late Rose John at about 9 p.m.
He said that as a result of the misunderstanding, the accused, Daniel, who was criminally armed with a dagger, forcefully dragged the deceased to the front of the house and stabbed him in the chest.
The prosecutor further told the court that Agada was left there in the pool of his blood until he was rushed to General Hospital, Okpo where he was confirmed dead.
Ganagana told the court that investigation into the matter was ongoing, and urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody.
