The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has urged the Lagos State Government to increase the number of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to improve waste management across the council area.
Hunpe made the call during a sanitation inspection on Saturday, covering key communities such as Badagry Roundabout, Jegba Quarters, Posukoh Quarters, and Wharakoh Quarters. He noted that the existing PSP operators are insufficient to meet the demands of a rapidly growing population.
“The most effective way to dispose of waste is to bag it and hand it over to PSP operators. Burning waste should be avoided,” Hunpe advised residents.
He emphasized that the council continues to deploy resources to clear indiscriminate dumping and maintain cleaner neighborhoods. Environmental health officers and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) corps have been mobilized to enforce compliance during and after sanitation exercises.
The chairman also praised residents for participating actively in the monthly environmental exercise, highlighting that many cleaned their surroundings even before the council’s teams arrived. Waste collection was facilitated using council-provided tricycles, with environmental officers monitoring adherence to proper disposal practices.
Hunpe encouraged residents to sustain good habits and noted that awareness of the monthly sanitation drive has been gradually increasing. During the visit to Jegba Quarters, he presented cash awards to residents who had maintained their environment in anticipation of the sanitation team.
“Our joint efforts will create a healthier, cleaner Badagry, and I urge everyone to continue supporting environmental initiatives,” he said
