ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Plateau University Over Unresolved Issues

The Plateau University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and institutional demands.

The Chairman of the union in the university, Dr Vincent Choji, announced the industrial action in a statement issued on Wednesday in Jos.

Choji said the decision followed a congress meeting held on Tuesday, where members agreed to begin the strike after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the relevant authorities.

He explained that the action was triggered by the failure of the state government to address the concerns raised by academic staff members.

According to him, one of the major issues is the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government.

The union also listed other demands, including the introduction of the contributory pension scheme for staff members, improved staff housing facilities and the construction of drainage trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.

Choji said ASUU was also demanding an end to what it described as intimidation of union leaders, referencing concerns raised in a letter addressed to the university congress through the Registrar on May 18.

The union further requested payment of outstanding arrears relating to the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.

“Congress has, with the approval of the National Executive Council of our union, resolved to proceed on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike,” Choji said.

He directed all ASUU members in the institution to suspend academic activities until further notice.

The union said the strike would remain in place until its demands receive adequate attention and necessary resolutions are reached.
