APC Slams Makinde Over ‘Operation Wetie’ Comment, Warns of Security Risk

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised Seyi Makinde over comments referencing “Operation Wetie” during a recent opposition gathering in Ibadan.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described the remarks as dangerous and potentially harmful to national stability.

Morka said the governor’s comments could be interpreted as inciting unrest, warning that such rhetoric poses a threat to peace and security.

He noted that invoking a historically violent political episode was inappropriate, particularly for a sitting governor who is expected to safeguard public safety.

The APC urged security and intelligence agencies to closely examine the statements and take necessary action to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

According to the party, no public office holder should make comments that could endanger lives or undermine democratic stability.

Morka stressed that while governors enjoy constitutional immunity, it does not absolve them of responsibility for statements that may threaten national security.

He added that leaders must exercise caution in their public remarks, especially in politically sensitive contexts.

The ruling party also dismissed claims by opposition figures suggesting the emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria.

Morka argued that the country’s political environment remains competitive, with multiple parties actively participating in the democratic process.

The APC further accused opposition parties of internal disorganisation, leadership challenges, and failure to present clear policy alternatives.

According to Morka, the opposition’s difficulties stem from internal conflicts rather than external interference.

He also rejected suggestions that the APC should assist opposition parties in resolving their internal issues.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to preparing for the 2027 general elections, emphasising its focus on mobilisation and governance.

Morka said the APC would continue to promote its policies and programmes, including the Renewed Hope Agenda under Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
